ISLAMABAD, Jan. 4 — At least 20 militants were killed and 14 others injured when Pakistani army launched an operation in the country’s northwest tribal region of Khyber on Friday morning, local media reported.

Local Urdu TV channel Geo quoted military sources as saying that the army jet fighters pounded five hideouts of militants in Tirah Valley area in Khyber, a restive semi-autonomous region bordering Afghanistan.

The identities of the dead and injured militants are not known.

Khyber is home to two major militant groups including Tehrik-e- Taliban Pakistan (movement of Pakistani Taliban) and Lashkar-e- Islam (militia of Islam), who are not only at odds with each other for territorial and sectarian dispute, but also target security forces and residents in the area.

On December 31 last year, an estimated 14 militants were killed and several others injured when army fighter jets pounded militant hideouts in Tirah Valley area.
