BOGOTA, Oct. 29 — Six policemen were killed and one wounded Monday in a rebel ambush in a rural area of southwest Colombia, official sources said.

The policemen were riding four motorcycles when they were attacked by gunfire in the afternoon in the southwestern province of Cauca, according to local police, who blamed the assault on the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, or FARC.

The attack came as negotiators from the Colombian government and FARC opened peace talks in Norway on Oct. 18 aimed at ending their nearly five-decade conflict.

The second phase of the talks is set to begin in Cuba’s capital of Havana on Nov. 15.
