THE HAGUE, March 19 — Several Turks living in The Netherlands are planning protests against the care of Turkish foster children in Dutch homosexual or Christian families, Dutch media reported on Tuesday.
The direct reason for the protests is the case of the 9-year-old boy Yunus of Turkish origin, who was raised by two lesbian parents. Due to the unrest, the foster mothers and their foster son went hiding because of fears for their safety.
Some Turks believe that an Islamic foster child cannot be placed with a homosexual or Christian couple. However, the problem is that too little foster parents with an Islamic background are available.
Yunus was placed at the Lesbian couple since he was five months old, because the Dutch Child Care Agency had indications of physically abuse by his biological parents.
Last week, his biological mother did an emotional call in Turkish media to get him back. The woman also asked Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan for help during his planned visit to The Netherland this week.
On Social Media by Dutch Turks made announcements about demonstrations at the headquarters of the Youth Care Agency. On Thursday, Erdogan will visit the Islamic University in Rotterdam, where also a demonstration is planned. In Turkey, commotion arose about the matter as well and Erdogan might raise questions on the issue.
Dutch Deputy Prime Minister Lodewijk Asscher earlier said Turkish interference would be “totally inappropriate”. He emphasized that the selection of a foster family will not be based on race or religion. “That does not fit in the Netherlands,” said Asscher.
