TEHRAN, Nov. 16 — Thousands of Iranians staged a protest on Friday against Israeli aggression on the Palestinian inhabitants of the Gaza Strip.
On Thursday, Iran’s Islamic Propagation Coordination Council, in an announcement, invited the Iranians for a nationwide protest rally against the Israeli aggression on Gaza after Friday prayers.
In Tehran, the demonstrators chanted slogans in favor of Palestinians and against Israel and the United States while moving to the Palestinian embassy.
Tehran’s interim Friday Prayers Leader, Ayatollah Ahmad Khatami, condemned Israel’s military operation in Gaza, hailing responses of Gaza militants to Israeli attacks.
The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) declared Wednesday evening the commencement of “Operation Pillar of Defense” in the Hamas- controlled Gaza Strip, starting with the targeted killing of Hamas military wing chief Ahmed al-Jaabari and a series of fatal airstrikes.
The Israeli recent attacks have also killed 20 Palestinians so far, at least nine of them civilians.
As the violence continued, two rockets were fired Thursday evening from Gaza at the greater Tel Aviv area, one landing in a city south of Tel Aviv and the other exploding off the southern coast of Tel Aviv. Both rockets caused no damage or injuries.
The armed wing of Hamas, Ezz el-Deen al-Qassam Brigades, said Friday that it has also fired a long-range rocket at Israel’s Knesset (parliament).
On Friday, the semi-official Fars news agency reported that Basij (voluntary) forces from Iran’s central city of Isfahan announced their readiness to be dispatched to the Gaza Strip to help the Palestinians.
In the meantime, Iranian Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani held separate telephone talks with his counterparts in Lebanon, Algeria, Pakistan, Syria, Iraq and Tunisia on Friday and urged parliaments of the Islamic countries to take action to condemn the crimes, said Fars.
He also held phone conversations with the secretary general of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), and secretary general of the Parliamentary Union of OIC, urging them to take practical measures against the attacks on Gaza, according to the report.
