Unidentified gunmen shot dead the lawyer, Mohammed Mejwil Sultan, as he was leaving his house in central Mosul, some 400 km north of Baghdad, the source said on condition of anonymity.
Two policemen were killed and four others injured when a roadside bomb struck their patrol in western Mosul, the source added.
In a separate incident, a police officer and three policemen were wounded when a roadside bomb struck their patrol in al-Najjar district in western Mosul, the source said.
Violence in Iraq has ebbed from its climax in 2006 and 2007, when sectarian conflicts pushed the country to the brink of a civil war, but tensions and sporadic shootings and bombings remain common across the country.
