CAIRO, Jan. 1 — A number of Egyptians staged on Tuesday a protest outside the Embassy of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in Cairo, calling for the immediate release of 11 detained Egyptians in the UAE without proper charges.

Representatives of Egypt’s syndicates of doctors, engineers and journalists, some young activists, as well as relatives of the detained, gathered outside the UAE embassy, shouting slogans calling for releasing the Egyptians, which the UAE arrested on the charge of opening offices without legal measures, official MENA news agency reported.

The 11 detainees are doctors, engineers and journalists, all of whom are working in the gulf Arab country.

The demonstrators asserted that their protest aims at expressing solidarity with the Egyptian detainees; and heavy security measures have been conducted around the UAE embassy.

For their parts, the UAE’s local media said that the arrested Egyptians belong to an organization of the Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood and are involved in illegal activities in their country.
