The South African National Apex Cooperative (SANACO) on Monday held a seminar in Johannesburg with cooperatives, preparing for the upcoming BRICS cooperatives leaders meeting.

The BRICS cooperatives leaders meeting will be hosted by South Africa’s Department of Trade and Industry in partnership with SANACO in Cape Town from October 26 to 27.

BRICS is the acronym of five emerging economies in the world, namely Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa.

SANACO President Lawrence Bale said the meeting is aimed at “facilitating the bilateral and multilateral cooperation among cooperative enterprises within the BRICS countries.”

“This relationship will boost the economy of the country, and more importantly it will assist in reducing the level of unemployment in the country,” added the president.

The meeting will be held under the theme “Partnerships for Development, Integration and Industrialization through Cooperatives,” seeing cooperatives leaders from Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa share ideas and learn from each other’s experiences.

SANACO is the umbrella organization in South Africa, representing all the cooperatives in the country.

The president of SANACO said South African cooperatives should forge trade links with other cooperatives from BRICS countries at the meeting to supply information on maize, tomatoes, potatoes and anything else they produce in the country.
