Ukrainian Parliament elects new speaker

KIEV, Dec. 13 — The Ukrainian Parliament on Thursday elected Volodymyr Rybak to a five-year term as the body’s speaker.

Rybak, a four-term lawmaker and deputy chairman of the ruling Party of Regions, won 250 of the 427 votes cast in the 450-seat parliament.

Rybak, 66, is known as one of the “founding fathers” of the Party of Regions and a long-term ally of President Viktor Yanukovych.

The leadership of the Party of Regions nominated Rybak to lead the parliament on Monday.
